Volunteers

The South Bend Paddlefest needs you! Volunteer to be a part of this new and exciting community event! We need people to help with many different aspects of the event.
Volunteers will receive a Paddlefest t-shirt! Please contact us if you're interested in volunteering for any aspect of the event.
  • Publicity Crew --Report to Chief of Publicity. All work is prior to event so this is an ideal job for folks wishing to actually participate in the event.
      Volunteers assist with promotional efforts including
    • placing entries and posters at different locations;
    • preparing/sending press packets; and
    • promotional appearances at other events.

  • Host Crew --report to Event Host. This group will help all participants get to where they need to go. Volunteers will help direct people to the Registration Center, to the food and refreshments, to the bathrooms, etc.
      Volunteers
    • direct racers to critical places;
    • direct exhibitors and vendors to the Exhibitor Display Area
    • in general, will be the helpful, friendly, smiling people who know their way around
    • will be stationed at the Finish Line to assist racers; i.e. help carry their boats, give them words of encouragement, etc.

  • Stadium/Main Event Site Crew --report to Chief of Race. This group, or parts of it, will often be needed the week prior to the event and sometimes during the week after.
      Volunteers
    • help set-up and clean-up start/finish areas;
    • man control points for participants and spectators; and other site duties.

  • Registration/Race Secretary Assistant Crew --Volunteers assist the Race Secretary with every aspect of processing registrations before and during the day of the event;
    • taking money,
    • helping collect filled out forms,
    • creating and distributing boat numbers,
    • Giving directions,
    • answering any questions and
    • providing information about the event before and during the day of the event;
    • processing results while event is in progress and afterwards

  • Timing Crew --Report to Chief of Timing. Must be trained prior to event.
      Volunteers
    • provide hand-held back-up timing for race events;
    • record boat numbers and times,
    • log times on tracking sheets,
    • write names and times on certificate sheets,
    • put certificates from last to 1st place in each category,
    • give results to Master of Ceremonies for Awards Ceremony.

  • Course Marshals --Report to Chief of Course.
    • Mark course and place all signs/controls (pre-event tasks);
    • man all control points along the route checking for safety, technique compliance, route compliance, etc.,
    • stationed at turn-around points, keep count until last boat passes,
    • stationed at any obstacle in river to provide support,
    • a person designated as a boat sweep.
